David Ulph has joined former Liverpool teammate Jack Hudson at the Lancashire Spinners, who committed to the club just the previous day.
“It was a very difficult decision to make,” Ulph told Spinners Online. “However, like Jack, the time is right to move on and explore new opportunities.
“After speaking to Neal [Hopkins] it was clear where I wanted to go. I admire the effort he puts into the club and respect the way he gives young English talent the opportunity to develop and excel.”
In seven years with Liverpool – including two as a junior on the under-18s – he won two league titles and three national championships. All accolades came following his return to the club in 2013-14.
The six-foot-six forward brings an added toughness to the team and an aggression on the boards. He averaged better than seven rebounds a game to go along with 14.2 points on a league best 65.6 pecent shooting last season.
“David is a big body who is going to bring his toughness and enthusiasm to the team,” said Lancashire Spinners General Manager Ken Masser. “He knows how to make the big play to swing momentum in the favour of his team, which will be a tremendous asset.”
The Widnes native contributed 16 points, as well as the game-winning dunk in overtime against London Greenhouse Pioneers to send Liverpool to the Division 2 playoff final.
“I’m excited about the role Neal wants me to fulfil within the team and his intentions for next season,” said Ulph. “Having played against the Spinners last year in the National Cup and seeing the passion from the fans, I look forward to getting in front of them.”
