Ayo Nuwe and David Walsh know what’s expected of them in a Neal Hopkins coached team.

“Total commitment, total dedication, total reliability, and to compete and have the desire to win no matter the circumstance,” said Walsh, who averaged 18.8 points per game with Myerscough College in National League Division 3.

Walsh, 19, and Nuwe, 18, will follow the path of Zion Tordoff and former Myerscough teammates Cian Hickey, Kyle Carey, Alex Roberts and George Darling to the Lancashire Spinners. All had impressive debut campaigns contributing standout performances throughout the season.

“His [Hopkins] expectations are always more than the expectations we have for ourselves – he only wants the best,” Nigerian native Nuwe added.

Between the two, Walsh and Nuwe accounted for over thirty points per game in Division 3 whilst the latter also averaged eight points and eight boards pulling double-duty in the Elite Academy Basketball League (EABL).

Both offer Hopkins versatility, and immediate scoring, in a system they know well and know how to have an impact in.

“I’m an aggressive player, which allows me to effective at either end of the floor,” said Nuwe, who came through the Manchester Magic junior system. “I know it will be a totally different level, but I’m very confident in my ability to adjust.”

“Ayo is another extremely talented young player who deserves his shot,” said Hopkins. “He will bring energy and toughness in abundance, which will certainly help us.”

Nuwe played alongside Tordoff at the World Schools Championship Basketball 3×3 tournament in Tallin, Estonia in June where Myerscough finished runners-up.

Walsh, meanwhile, will look to fill the void left by the Spinners’ third leading scorer Kyle Carey, who accepted a scholarship to play at the University of Northern Colorado (USA-NCAA).

“Dave is a guard with great IQ and he’s a very effective scorer. What I really like about him is he is extremely instinctive,” Hopkins said.

The pair has a tremendous blueprint to follow and know they will be given an opportunity to succeed.

“Seeing those guys working hard on their game in practice and in the gym whilst being at Myerscough is so beneficial,” Walsh, an Oldham native, commented. “Seeing their progression and hard work paying off has made my push myself more.”
