Lancashire’s Zion Tordoff secured a place in the England U18s squad for the European Championships in Skopje, Macedonia following a trio of friendlies against the Netherlands.
“It’s been a huge goal of mine ever since I started playing basketball to play for England,” said Tordoff, who will be playing in his first Euros. “Being able to represent my country is such an honour.”
England opens Group D play against the Ukraine at the Sports Centre Jane Sandanski on July 29 before facing Slovakia, Georgia, Scotland and Albania.
The 17-year-old, who averaged a double-double whilst playing for Myerscough in National League Division 3, contributed 2.5 points and 2.4 rebounds per game in 15 games after joining the Spinners in January. He had a season-high 11 points at Castle Leisure Centre versus Kent in March.
“I have been exposed to high levels of competition playing for both Myerscough (Elite Academy Basketball League) and the Spinners (NL Division 1), which has definitely prepared me what I’ll see at the European Championships,” Tordoff said.
“I want to contribute as much as I can at both ends of the floor in order for the team to be successful. Our team objective is to get promoted into Division A by finishing in the top three.”
The Bradford native joins Kyle Carey (Great Britain U20s) as the two Spinners to reach international competition this summer.
England U18s played in the classification game for 13th and 14th place at the 2014 European Championships.
