Spinners falter against Northumbria

Lancashire couldn’t overcome a double-digit halftime deficit against Northumbria in 86-71 loss at Myerscough College on Saturday.

Northumbria’s Blayne Freckleton (16 points) hit back-to-back 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to start the third quarter giving the visitors an early 17-point lead.

Malcolm Smith finished with 26 points on 11-for-17 shooting in his second game for Northumbria, who rebounded from its first National League defeat. Simon Stewart added 10.

Northumbria (7-2, 4-1) grabbed a 14-7 lead midway through the opening quarter following a 9-2 burst over a three-minute stretch.

The Spinners recovered and closed the gap to six after ending the first period on a 6-0 run. But Northumbria extended its lead back to double digits at 28-18.

Lancashire guard Jack Hudson then scored 10-straight points to cut the deficit to a point with 6:30 left before halftime. Northumbria responded, but Mark Rangeley hit a 3-pointer make it a one-possession game again.

Though the Spinners fell cold missing their next seven shots and made two turnovers allowing Northumbria to bust open an 11-point lead during a 10-0 run.

Holding a 45-34 advantage at halftime, Northumbria led by as many as 22 throughout the third quarter.

Lancashire managed to cut the deficit to nine and a David Walsh 3-pointer forced a timeout with 2:46 left. But Northumbria converted 8-of-8 free throws down the stretch as the Spinners tried to extend the game.

Forward David Ulph has had double-doubles in back-to-back games for the Spinners (2-6, 1-3), as he led five in double figures scoring with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

NOTES: Mark Rangeley had 16 points, including three 3-pointers … He grabbed seven rebounds … Walsh scored 14 points off the bench on 5-of-8 shooting … He was 4-of-6 from 3-point range … James Banton started his third game of the season and had 10 points (2-5 on 3-pointers) … The Spinners’ bench was outscored 42-14 … Lancashire outrebounded 42-33 and outscored 46-18 in the paint.
