Bury U16s fall to Liverpool in bid for regular season crown

LIVERPOOL — Callum Brady scored 16 points and Rob Stansfield added 13, but the Bury U16 Spinners fell short in its bid for a North West League regular season title at Liverpool Red on Saturday.

Csaba Grill and Luc Baldwin added eight points each in an 87-61 loss at a tightly packed Archbishop Beck Sports College.

Bury made a spry start, but Liverpool translated offensive boards into second chance points and a 33-21 lead after forward Mark McCoy found himself in early foul trouble.

The Spinners outscored Liverpool by three points in the second quarter, highlighted by an acrobatic lay up from Grill, which kept his team — down 50-41 — in the hunt at halftime.

A fast start from Bury brought it within six points of Red midway through the third quarter, but that was the high watermark, as the opposition embarked on an 8-0 run en route to being crowned regular season champions.

Scorers: Callum Brady 16, Rob Stansfield 13, Csaba Grill 8, Luc Baldwin 8, Joshua McLaughlin 6, Joe Heyes 5, Mark McCoy 4, Sol Prince 1.

NEXT UP: Bury hosts Sefton at Elton High School on Mar. 11 before the first round of playoffs begin on the weekend of Mar. 24.

Brady scores 21, but Bury U14s edged by Magic

MANCHESTER — Boston Brady finished with 21 points, but the Bury U16s were narrowly edged 60-57 by Manchester in a hard-fought contest at the Amaechi Centre on Sunday.

Leon Ramsden and Besar Broqi added 10 points each for Bury, which will finish the season in third place.

The game was always finely poised and Bury started brightly running out to 13-8 lead. Manchester, however, hit back with a seven-point run before Daanish Sulaman came off the bench to square the score at 15 apiece.

The Magic again pegged their opposition back in the second quarter after balanced scoring brought Bury the gap out to five points. A 10- run lifted Manchester into a 37-35-halftime lead.

A quick start out of the break gave the Spinners a seven point lead, only for Manchester to storm back to trail 50-47. The Magic completed their comeback with a 6-0 run to take a 59-56 lead with a minute remaining.

Brady went 1-of-2 at the free throw line, which allowed to Manchester to close out the game.

Scorers: Boston Brady 21, Leon Ramsden 10, Besar Broqi 10, Daanish Sulaman 6, Guerschom Taiwo 6, Charles Okafor 2, Bradley Hughes 2.
